No pain, no gain at Wuppertal, by Anca Nistor2015-07-06

Smile! Be elegant! Focus! Be confident! Perform! Those are the words, which motivated me throughout the three days at danceComp in Wuppertal, Germany.

The Historical Town Hall in Wuppertal is a beautiful building. Stepping inside made me feel powerful and full of confidence. At the end of each competition day when I’m back in the hotel room, I reflected over the details of each moment I’ve seen and experienced. I have now returned home fully inspired, with new targets and with an insane desire to dance.

At the beginning of the competition, I could hardly control my emotions. We danced only one round in the Standard event, and it quickly made us realise how much we still need to work on our dancing. We also watched and supported other couples from our club doing their best.

The second day was a totally different story due to a morning Latin event, followed by a late evening Standard event. I woke up earlier than my partner, Marcin, to give myself extra time for preparation and get ready before breakfast. I really enjoyed being part of a dance team, which made me feel less stressed, more composed and secure.

At 9am the Latin event began. I was so nervous when I stepped on the dance floor that I didn’t realise what I was doing, until I found out we got a recall. Afterwards, we relaxed and focused more on each other, but as soon as we found out we were through to the final, the butterflies invaded our stomachs again. We enjoyed the final and, to our surprise, we were the winners!

The third day was the motivating day. The main hall was full of WDSF level dancers competing at the World Open events. I have been inspired by their costumes, hairstyle and make-up, and most of all, their performance encouraged me to work harder in the studio, in order to achieve higher goals and be a better dancer.

Overall, it was the greatest competition I have experienced by far and I am looking forward to competing again.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN!
